As I focus more and more on my focus student Josh, I continue to learn all of his strengths and weaknesses. Josh is in fourth grade but is on a first grade reading level. Although he has support from many teachers at school as well as at home, he continues to struggle in almost every subject. I have noticed that he has a hard time focusing in class because most of the time he doesn't understand the material that is being taught and he seems to get frustrated very easily. Josh is considered ESE, however his mother insists on keeping him in my CT's classroom instead of going to another classroom for reading and language arts. When Josh is doing group work, I noticed he does a little better with focusing on what he needs to do because his group members are getting him involved in the discussions, but he still doesn't understand the material. When I first started to observe him, I noticed that his hand writing wasn't readable so I was going to do my inquiry on his hand writing. Now that I have observed him more I want to try to help him with focusing in class so he can learn more and understand the material better as well. Since my focus students needs a lot of attention, my question is I wonder how I can help Josh improve his handwriting as well as helping him focus more in class?
