Since the first day of our internship, we have been filling out a community packet to get to know the students a little more. This has helped me get to know each students demographics as well as getting to know them personally. It has also helped me get familiar with my collaborating teachers classroom procedures. By observing I learned that there are 18 students in the class with 9 boys and 9 girls. The class is very diverse when it comes to their race/ethnicity. By talking to my CT, I learned that there is one ELL student that speaks Spanish and only 3 students that receive free or reduced lunch. There are also five students that receive ESE services. Some of these students suffer from ADHD, processing issues, and fine motor issues. All 18 of the students live close to Brooker, and one of them even walks home. Since the first day of my internship, I noticed that my CT isn't very strict because her class is so well behaved. Some of her procedures that I have noticed are the students are only allowed to use the restroom before school, before math at 10:30am and before lunch unless it is an emergency. Pencil sharpening is only done in the morning and they must hand in their homework as soon as they walk into the class. Any other class work that needs to be turned in through out the day should be put into the red basket in the center of the classroom. My CT has enforced the school wide rules and if any of the students do not follow them, then she will communicate with the students parents through their agenda or an e-mail. While filling this packet out, I asked my collaborating teacher what she would like me to do as an intern. Her response was for me to gradually take on responsibility to remind the students to do what is expected of them. Although I felt a little pressured to get to know my students personally in order to fill out this packet, I feel as if it has really helped me get to know them not only on an academic level but a personal level as well.
Last Tuesday was my first day as a intern at Brooker Elementary. I was placed in a fourth grade class and I met my collaborating teacher for the first time. I was very nervous walking into the classroom, I didn't know what to expect but she was very welcoming and she made me feel as if I was already part of the class. As the students came into the classroom, they began their usual morning routine. They put all of their things away in the closet and began their welcome work, which is just a short review. A little after the day started my CT wanted me to introduce myself, but instead of telling the students all about me, I decided to have the students ask me questions instead. Later into the morning, my CT started to collect their math homework from the night before. One of the kids had a hard time with it so she asked me if I could help him. I loved helping him, I felt like I was already a teacher and he was one of my students. Usually when I go to classrooms I only observe the class from the corner and I never get to actually help the students. The rest of the day I observed the class to get used to their routine, to see my CT’s style of teaching and I would occasionally walk around the room to see what the students were doing. When I first found out that I was going to be in a fourth grade class I was a little disappointed. I really wanted first or second, however after Tuesday now I think I might want to teach fourth grade instead. I am extremely excited to go again and I can not wait to get more involved with the class this time
