Last Tuesday was my first day as a intern at Brooker Elementary. I was placed in a fourth grade class and I met my collaborating teacher for the first time. I was very nervous walking into the classroom, I didn't know what to expect but she was very welcoming and she made me feel as if I was already part of the class. As the students came into the classroom, they began their usual morning routine. They put all of their things away in the closet and began their welcome work, which is just a short review. A little after the day started my CT wanted me to introduce myself, but instead of telling the students all about me, I decided to have the students ask me questions instead. Later into the morning, my CT started to collect their math homework from the night before. One of the kids had a hard time with it so she asked me if I could help him. I loved helping him, I felt like I was already a teacher and he was one of my students. Usually when I go to classrooms I only observe the class from the corner and I never get to actually help the students. The rest of the day I observed the class to get used to their routine, to see my CT’s style of teaching and I would occasionally walk around the room to see what the students were doing. When I first found out that I was going to be in a fourth grade class I was a little disappointed. I really wanted first or second, however after Tuesday now I think I might want to teach fourth grade instead. I am extremely excited to go again and I can not wait to get more involved with the class this time

Wow, Jillian, our first days sound very similar even though our grades are completely different (you had fourth and I had kindergarten). My teacher also asked me to introduce myself to the class after an hour or two of them staring and wondering from a distance. I started trying to talk about myself but they ended up just shooting questions and random comments anyway that it was really a good idea that you just started it that way! That's also very nice that your CT already had you start to work with some of the students on your very first day, I feel like that's what really made you comfortable in your classroom and it also made the students more comfortable with you. Fourth graders are usually pretty intimidating in my opinion, so I am so glad to hear that you really enjoy being in their classroom.

That is great that you were able to learn a lot by filling out the classroom packet. I also learned a lot after completing it.Some of the questions I was nervous to ask my CT about because I felt that the information was somewhat personal but I was glad that I did. My CT is also the same way with rule enforcement. She is very strict when it comes to following the rules and the students are pretty good about following them. I m Glad to hear that you were able to collect valuable information and get to know the students more.
